As one of America's premiere specialty practices our primary focus is contact lens care.  However we also provide a full range of eyecare services either directly or in conjunction with referring providers.  Examinations begin with diagnostic testing performed by our well trained staff. All patients undergo computerized auto-refraction (measurement of your prescription), auto-keratometry (measurement of corneal curvature), tonography (measurement of intraocular pressure - glaucoma screening) and corneal topography mapping.  State of the art frequency doubling (FDT) perimetry is used to evaluate your peripheral vision, an important diagnostic clue to glaucoma and neurological problems.

Your examination by Dr. Epstein or Dr. Freedman may remind you of what a visit to the doctor was like before managed care and rushed visits Phoropter for Refraction became the norm.  Expect a routine exam to take at least 45 minutes.  If you have a more complex problem the evaluation may take even longer.

A comprehensive examination includes a careful refraction and vision evaluation performed by the doctor, a thorough examination of the structures of the front of your eyes using slit lamp biomicroscopy and of your retina using indirect ophthalmoscopy.

The contact lens evaluation and fitting experience is so unique that ophthalmology residents, optometry students, practicing clinicians and industry executives frequently visit our office to observe.  The key to contact lens success, especially with complex patients is patience, persistence and over 40 years of combined experience.  We are results oriented and will take the time necessary to meet your individual needs.

Emergency Care

It is reassuring to know that we can be reached 24 hours a day through our regular office number, 516-299-4540.  When calling after hours with an emergency, please choose the emergency option on our voice mail, confirm that it is an emergency and leave a message with your name, phone number (repeated twice) and the nature of your problem.  A doctor will return your call as soon as possible.

We see all types of ocular emergencies including infections (such as pink eye or conjunctivitis), foreign bodies, and other eye problems.  If you also have another eyecare practitioner we ask that you attempt to contact them first for general eye problems.  However, if your problem is contact lens related, please contact our office first.  Diagnosing the cause of a contact lens complication is much easier if we can see the problem as early as possible.

Follow-up Care

All patients should have routine eye examinations.  However, all contact lens patients require specific follow-up care.  Some patients should be seen as often as every three months; most patients are followed every six months. To reduce the cost of continued care for our patients we offer our professional service plan (PSP). The PSP provides coverage for routine contact lens related eyecare as well as reduced cost replacement lenses.  Out staff can provide more information.

Refractive Surgery - LASIK

We have been involved with refractive surgery from the moment the excimer laser was first approved in the USA and have extensive experience comanaging refractive surgery patients.  We were among the first optometric affiliates of 20/20 Laser Vision Centers (now TLC Laser Eye Centers) and work closely with some of New York's finest refractive surgeons.   Dr. Epstein served as Center Director for TLC Laser Vision Centers and as Medical Director of Surgical Eyes Foundation.  The key to an excellent refractive surgery result is careful patient selection, a through workup and selecting the best surgeon for the procedure and your individual needs.

If you are interested in refractive surgery we would be happy to explore all options available as well as the potential risks and benefits.  Please let us know if you would like to schedule a refractive surgery consultation when you make your appointment.
